International Judicial Cooperation

The International Judicial Cooperation Unit of the Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice (DGAJ) ensures international judicial cooperation in the field of maintenance, service, taking of evidence in civil or commercial matters and cross-border civil actions in the EU.

This Unit is responsible for dealing with rogatory letters and other acts linked to foreign legal orders, in accordance with the terms of their respective treaties and conventions. In support of this execution, there are legal instruments for judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters of bilateral and multilateral nature, whether supranational / transnational or international.

For the bilateral or international plan, DGAJ responds, directly or indirectly, to the UN, The Hague Conference on Private Law in Civil and Commercial Matters and the Judicial Network for Cooperation of the Community of the Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). For the supranational/transnational plan DGAJ is as a member of the European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters (EJN).
